Recents days have seen the Fed Chairman, Ben Bernanke urge American lenders to respond vigourously to the US housing crisis by cutting the size of outstanding home loans. Mr Bernanke has suggested that an industry wide move to do more to avert foreclosures should and can be done. He said that cutting the size of loans would be an effective way of reducing defaults, giving homeowners an incentive to keep up loan payments. He actually said that banks were reluctant to write down the prinicpal on a loan - Is he really surprised by this? However to be fair to Mr Bernanke, he does seem to have the homeowners interests at heart right now, adding ' Principal reductions that restore some equity for the homeowner may be a relatively more effective means of avoiding delinquency and foreclosure.' read more » |
